A recent study reveals that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing these medications need to be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of appetite.
"It was like something activating and you're instantly ravenous," recalled an individual.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
